Easy Troubleshooting Steps for No Internet Connection
No internet connection – Nowadays, having a stable and reliable internet connection can already be considered a necessity. People utilize the power of the internet in numerous day-to-day activities such as communication, work, entertainment, education, or business. However, despite the advancement in the internet technology, there are times when users encounter internet connectivity issues and this could really get frustrating.
Before panicking and scheduling a technician visit (which could cost hundreds of dollars), there are many troubleshooting steps that you can perform at home if you have no internet connection.
Indicator Lights of Devices
The first things that you must check whenever you encounter internet connectivity issues are the LED lights of your modem and router. These lights are quick and easy indicators of the connection status. Check if the devices are properly plugged to a power source or if they are turned off if there are no lights showing. Depending on the brand and the model of the device, a functioning modem or router must have either a solid or flashing green light. A solid or flashing amber, yellow, or red light is a clear indication that something is wrong with the connection.
Most of the time, a simple power cycle process can fix this. Unplug the modem or the router from the power source, leave it off for about one to two minutes, then plug it back in. Wait for a few minutes for the modem and router to fully-establish the connection. Connect the device to a different power outlet if there are still no lights flashing. If the modem or the router still doesn’t display any light, chances are either the adapter is faulty or the device is already fried, thus a replacement is necessary. Should the modem or router still display “fail” status lights, proceed to the next step.
If you are connecting to the internet using a wired connection, you must check and make sure that all Ethernet cables are securely plugged to their designated ports. Unplug and re-plug the Ethernet cables and wait for the LED indicator lights to stabilize.
For wireless connections, it is important to first isolate where the main trouble is. Connect the computer to the router or modem using an Ethernet cable and check connectivity. If successful, then it is an indication that there is no problem with the internet service or the computer and the issue is in the wireless connectivity. Make sure that the wireless adapter of the computer is turned on and receives signal from the router.
Also, verify that the connection coming into your home is good. Inspect the main cables that go through the wall socket and the internet enclosures located outside of the house. Check that all the connectors are tightly fastened and are free from rust, dirt, or any debris.
If you are already certain that the physical connections are all good, but you are still getting no internet connection, you can then proceed to checking the network settings.
The Command Prompt
Computers have built-in command prompt programs that users can utilize to check network connectivity. You can launch this in many ways depending on the computer’s operating system. Using different commands, you can identify the root cause of the internet connection failure.
The first thing that you can check with the help of the command prompt is the IP address that the computer is getting. This is a set of numbers separated by periods, which computers use as identification in communicating in a network. Type “ipconfig” in the command prompt window and press enter to display the current IP address, subnet mask, and default gateway assigned to the computer. By default, a router automatically assigns these numbers to a computer. Check the router’s instruction manual for the acceptable IP address numbers that a computer should get as it varies depending on the router manufacturer.
If the computer is not getting a valid IP address, you can refresh it using the command prompt. Type “ipconfig /release” to reset the IP address settings of the computer. The command prompt should display a message saying that the release is successful. Next, type “ipconfig /renew” in order for the router to re-assign a new IP address to the computer. Try connecting to the internet to verify if the troubleshooting step fixed the problem.
If there is still internet connection issues, you can perform a ping command to any website using the command prompt. By typing “ping google.com” or “ping yahoo.com” on the command prompt window, the computer will send several packets to the web address server to see if it can establish a communication. If a web address successfully receives the packets, the command prompt will show a series of “reply from” messages and a 0% packet loss. On the other hand, a failed communication will show a percentage in packet loss or a longer reply time. This indicates a network problem which could be caused by the website itself (unless other websites show the same ping results) or the Internet service provider, or ISP.
Computer and Networking Device Settings
Internet connectivity issues could sometimes be caused by some computer and networking device software and settings. If you made some changes in the computer or in your modem or router and had trouble connecting to the internet afterwards, it may be due to those new configurations. Also, some computers and networking devices perform automatic updates that could also be the root cause of the problem.
You may choose to start your router fresh by performing a hard reset. Most routers have a reset pinhole located at the back panel that resets the device to its factory settings. Using a paperclip or a pin, press the reset button and hold it down for a few seconds until the LED indicator lights start flashing. You will then be automatically led to the router setup utility once you try to connect to the internet. It is also important to check that the firmware of the router is up to date.
Firewalls and antivirus software can also block the internet connection. Temporarily disable all third-party protection software and check if the computer can access the internet. If so, contact the manufacturer of the software to verify the correct settings that will allow internet connection to go through the computer without sacrificing safety and security.
All the troubleshooting steps given above can help ensure that your computer and your network devices are in top shape and are not the causes of the connection issue. If you still get no internet connection, it would be best to contact your ISP as this could possibly be an issue on their end.
